erin fitzgerald yogaErin Fitzgerald began her yoga studies in the Eighties, while pursuing a career as a modern dancer/choreographer in New York City.  An ankle injury led her to an Iyengar yoga class, which a colleague recommended as a form of physical therapy.  The Iyengar method, with its emphasis on physical alignment and the use of various yoga "props," helped heal her ankle. More importantly, it opened a door to a more profound diaolog between the body and mind that dance had not revealed.

After much encouragement from her first teacher Genny Kapuler, Erin began to teach.   She completed the teacher-training course at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Manhattan and, in 1999, became a certified Iyengar instructor. She taught at many venues in the city, including the 92nd St. Y, the Julliard School, the Yogasana Center in Brooklyn, and at her home studio.

Over time, Erin's practice led her to investigate a lighter, freer approach to the yoga asanas (postures). During this time she met her current teacher, Donald Moyer, an early student of B.K.S. Iyengar. Donald’s guidance has helped fine tune her inquiry into various body systems including the respiratory, skeletal, and endocrine.  By making adjustments to the postures from the “inside out,” she aims to achieve a greater, over-all sense of balance, strength, and ease.

Workshops with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen of Body Mind Centering also informed her teaching, as well as Erin's study of the Alexander technique.

In her classes Erin strives to guide students through their own self-study while performing the asanas.  She creates a warm atmosphere using encouraging and insightful instructions.  Students come away with a quieter mind and a healthier state of being.

In the summer of 2008, Erin and her family moved to Ithaca, N.Y. where she currently teaches at Soma Yoga and Living Arts Studio and also conducts private sessions.
